Window Treatment # 2 … Let’s Talk About Function!

This month we are going to talk about the primary functions of window treatments.

  1. Window treatments help with acoustic problems. Have you ever had an echo-y, cold room? But like magic, window treatments go up and the echo goes down.

   * As hardwood, LVP, tile, and other non-carpet floor options become more and more popular, window treatments are more valuable than ever before!

Of course, not all homes or spaces are created the same, nor are our needs; however, in most areas, you can add drapery panels to Relieve some of the effects of an echoey room. *Follow us for more information on customizing drapery panels to fit your specific needs.

You may find yourself in greater need of window treatments for acoustic relief in spaces like a dining room, office, two-story living room, and/or a foyer. Often, we need acoustic relief in bathrooms and kitchens as well. In these instances, we do not typically recommend long panels but instead fabric shades and or valances/cornices.

  1. Remember…the larger the space and the taller the ceiling, the more critical it is to have fabric window treatments for acoustic relief.

2. Privacy

We can all use some privacy at times! Houses are closer today than ever before, which means your “private area” has shrunk with your yard, giving us more need for privacy treatments on our windows. Treating our windows could provide us with peace of mind.

1) The ability to sit in the living room without possible onlookers walking by.

2) Peace of mind that our neighbors are not checking out our cherished furnishings and collectibles.

3) Vacationing without people looking into our personal space.

4) Showering, dressing, and walking freely around our own homes without giving the neighborhood a show.

Also, we can have peace of mind to enjoy time in our homes without distractions from the outside world…

One of our client's sole purpose for doing window treatments was for private dining. For her, dinner time was family time. She wanted long panels in her eat-in kitchen so there would be no distractions for her children. She had the option to close them during dinner time so that her children were not longing to be with their friends playing outside. The bonus was creating a warm and inviting eating space!

3. Protection from the sun or outdoor elements

Most of my clients loved the idea of big beautiful windows when buying or building their lovely homes. The beautiful lake or mountain views are simply fantastic, a great way to enjoy the outside from the inside! But what happens when you are not enjoying the views? Well, the sun may still be enjoying the view of your expensive furniture, art, or other prized possessions! Over time, this can break down the fibers of your fabrics, fade the fabric colors, or damage and/or fade your wood furniture or flooring!

Add up all of your investments in just one room of your home. Now, think about how long you would like to keep these items? Investing in one more design element to protect your other investments and, of course, give you that privacy when you need it and perhaps help with the acoustics in the room can be so much more than wasted money.
